Five Gun World Hunting Writers Name Model 70 Their All-Time Favorite Classic Rifle
Five Gun World Hunting Writers Name Their All-Time Favorite Classic Rifle
– and All Five Name the Winchester Model 70!
Review of article in Gun World Magazine -- September 2013.
Everyone knows the Winchester Model 70 is The Rifleman’s Rifle (and has been since 1936). That fact was reaffirmed in the September 2013 issue of Gun World magazine, when five of their most seasoned gun writers – Buck Pope, Mike Dickerson, Todd Burgreen, Tom Tabor and Brad Fitzpatrick – got together around a “virtual campfire” and compared notes on a number of hunting and shooting subjects, including what gun was their all-time favorite hunting rifle.
While they may have differed in opinion on almost every other subject they bantered about, on this question all five were in total agreement. The classic pre-’64 pattern Model 70 was hands down everyone’s favorite rifle. No other rifle, regardless of design, make or model, even came close.
We suspect that all the things that have always made the Winchester Model 70 The Rifleman’s Rifle – like a flat-bottomed forged steel receiver, controlled-round feeding, massive external claw extractor, blade ejection, three-position safety, pin-point accuracy and utter reliability– are the same things that these five demanding outdoor writers want when they are making a once-in-a lifetime shot on a trophy animal. Best of all, today’s Model 70s still incorporate all these great features, plus some great new ideas like the latest three-lever M.O.A. Trigger.

(PS: They like classic Winchester shotguns, too!)
Buck Pope’s favorite Model 70 is an original 1953-vintage rifle chambered in the classic 270 Winchester cartridge. It generally wears a modern Leupold VX-L 3.5-10 scope fitted with Talley bases and rings.
