John M. Browning told his father one day that he could make a better rifle than the ones he was repairing in the shop. His dad said, "I wish you would get at it." The result was the Model 1885, his first firearm invention, patented in 1885. The High Wall single shot model has been chambered in more calibers than any other model. Its falling block action is noted for its strength and incredible inherent accuracy. The stock is a straight grip style with a Schnabel forearm, finished in a satin, oil-type and finely checkered at the grip and forearm. It has a nostalgic crescent butt with top strap. Swivel studs are included. The full octagon, semi-heavy barrel is 28" long and deeply blued. For sights, the Model 1885 features a precise, adjustable tangent/tang rear peep sight and a standard elevator-type rear sight on the barrel in a buckhorn style. The front sight is a blade type with a 1/16" gold bead.
