Firearms safety depends on you. From the time you pick up a firearm, you become part of a system over which you have complete control. You are the only part of the system that can make a gun safe—or unsafe. Hunting and target shooting are among the safest of all sports. Many tools are provided that are intended to make firearms even safer. One of these is the "Firearms Safety Depends on You" brochure provided by Winchester Repeating Arms and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). This brochure helps by emphasizing the basics of safe gun handling and storage and by reminding you that you are the key to firearms safety. View the entire brochure by going to the NSSF Website "Literature" page or download a PDF by clicking here.

Consider securing your firearms with a gun safe.  If it has been too long since you thought about securing your firearms, then now is the time to act. One of the best ways to protect your firearms from unwanted hands is a gun safe. When it comes to obtaining peace of mind -- securing your guns from children, unwanted hands and fire -- nothing offers you more benefits than a top quality gun safe in your home. Too often people put off buying a gun safe and then, when a burglary occurs, they find their fine firearms and other valuables are lost forever. A quality gun safe has many interior options for storing a complete firearms collection and for securing other valuables and documents.

Fire Prevention
Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention. The fire outlook in much of the West is often severe. For this reason the National Shooting Sports Foundation is reminding target shooters and hunters to be cautious when using firearms in hot, dry environments and to share its fire-prevention poster with others in the outdoors community. You can download the poster in two sizes--the standard 8.5 x 11 inchesand a larger 11 x 17 size--each is suitable for displaying at shooting ranges, firearms retail shops and outdoor-equipment stores, as well as sharing on websites, blogs and social media sites. The poster encourages firearms owners to know the rules and regulations related to shooting in fire-prone areas; to minimize the risk of fire by not using ammunition that is steel-jacketed or has steel-core components, and by not using tracer rounds or exploding targets; to remember that a vehicle or ATV's hot exhaust pipes could ignite a fire; and to properly extinguish campfires, among other fire-prevention measures. Wildfires have many possible causes, and target shooters and hunters who are aware of their surroundings, cautious and responsible can make sure they are not among them. Dont Lie for the Other Guy
Dont Lie for the Other Guy

Don't Lie For the Other Guy. Convicted felons, minors, persons determined by a court of law to be "mentally defective" and certain others are prohibited by law from buying a firearm.  If a friend or relative asks you to lie to the federal government or to a federally licensed firearms retailer to try to buy a gun for him/her, don't do it! It's not worth 10 years in jail.  Understanding the importance of cooperating with law enforcement, the firearms industry through the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) -- the industry's trade association -- has for more than a decade partnered with the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) to assist law enforcement in educating firearms retailers to be better able to identify and deter illegal straw purchases and to raise public awareness that straw purchasing is a serious crime.
